John Herbst, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine (2003-2006) and Senior Director of the Eurasian Center at the Atlantic Council, believes that completing the construction of units No. 3 and No. 4 at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant will enhance Ukraine's cooperation with the U.S. in the field of nuclear energy and will contribute to the country's energy independence.
He wrote about this on his X account.
"As Moscow's air campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure continues, it is encouraging to see that the Rada is considering legislation to finish building the Khmelnytskyi NPP, which is expected to occur in collaboration with American companies. This will promote Ukraine's energy independence and further cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine in nuclear energy," the Ambassador stated.
As reported, back in April 2024, the Cabinet approved the decision to complete the construction of two units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. This week, the Verkhovna Rada intends to review the corresponding project. Unit No. 3 is 80% complete, while unit No. 4 is 25% complete.
