What is the "Zubr" armored vehicle for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and why is it neither Ukrainian nor Polish?

It is clear that "Zubr" refers to VAMTAC, and most importantly, they are being provided as part of direct military assistance to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has announced that it has codified and approved the operation of the armored vehicle "Zubr," which is noted for its high mobility and compact size, as well as its armor against small arms and mine protection.

No additional information has been provided regarding the manufacturer of this armored vehicle, whether it is a Ukrainian development or foreign, or which country supplies it—only a low-resolution photo allows for identification of the Zubr.

At the same time, the name "Zubr" has led some to suggest that it refers to the Polish armored vehicle Żubr from AMZ-Kutno based on the Iveco EuroCargo. Ultimately, this is also an MRAP, but a comparison of photos shows that this is not the case.

However, the name "Zubr" also hints at another NATO country—Spain, which has the URO VAMTAC in its arsenal. The name incorporates the manufacturer’s name—URO, Vehículos Especiales S.A., and Vehiculo de Alta Movilidad Tactico, which translates to high mobility tactical vehicle.

The fact is that the publication of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense ArmyInform in its article about this vehicle stated that URO means "zubr," "turok," or "primeval bull." This same publication also used a similar photo of this vehicle overcoming a water obstacle. It is evident that the codified "Zubr" is the Spanish VAMTAC.

Overall, the discussion about "Zubr" and URO VAMTAC is clearly related to the fact that Spain has begun direct deliveries of these vehicles to Ukraine. This was reported in October by the head of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, Margarita Robles.

Additionally, the VAMTAC has a combat weight of 5.8 tons and is quite similar in capabilities and purpose to the American HMMWV. It has been actively used by the Spanish army since 1998, with over 4,500 units produced in total. It should also be understood that over its existence, the vehicle has undergone several upgrades and modifications, so the exact specifications and options, such as armor installation, depend on the version.
