The President of Mexico firmly responded to Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico, even showcasing a map to emphasize her point.

In Mexico, there are calls to continue the trend of renaming.
Президент Мексики решительно ответила Трампу на его предложение изменить название Мексиканского залива, продемонстрировав даже карту.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to the proposals made by the elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf. Experts are still trying to determine whether her response was a joke or a display of firmness.

This was reported by The Guardian. Sheinbaum reminded that in Mexico's founding document from 1814, North America was referred to as "Mexican America."

"Sounds good, doesn't it?" — she asked the audience while showing an old map of the continent.

She also noted that the Gulf of Mexico was named in 1607 and this name is recognized by the UN.

During her speech, Sheinbaum addressed Trump's statement that drug cartels govern Mexico: "The people govern Mexico."

"Humor can be an effective tactic. It demonstrates strength, which is something Trump reacts to. This was likely the right choice in this situation," commented Brian Winter, Vice President of the Council of the Americas.

However, he added that this tactic won't always work, as the Trump administration will demand cooperation from its southern neighbor on issues related to immigration, drugs, and trade.

Previously, Trump had threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico, to which Sheinbaum responded that she would implement reciprocal measures and warned that these actions could lead to job losses in both countries.

At the same time, she took a more lenient view of the future U.S. administration's stance on immigration issues, as she herself supports efforts to prevent people from migrating north.

As reported by "Telegraph," on January 7, elected President Donald Trump made a series of controversial statements. In particular, he indicated that he does not rule out military or economic pressure to gain control over Greenland and the Panama Canal.
