The President of the United States, Donald Trump, with a single phone call to Russian leader Vladimir Putin on February 12, effectively nullified years of U.S. efforts to isolate the Kremlin resident and undermined Washington's entire policy in Ukraine. It seems that Trump plans to simply "hand over" Ukraine to Putin.
This is reported by Bloomberg citing its own sources. European leaders have expressed, to put it mildly, concern over Trump's actions and his statements regarding "immediate negotiations" and mutual visits.
Since February 2022, when the Russian regime began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and Russia have not communicated. Washington has supported Ukraine in the war, but now all signs indicate that Trump may betray Kyiv.
"Everything is changing rapidly now. European leaders, who were generally aligned with Washington under Biden, were stunned to learn of this call, and some indicated that it seems to signal that Trump is surrendering Ukraine", the publication notes.
Trump is particularly skeptical about providing aid to Ukraine and is attempting to extract compensation for it, for instance, in the form of access to Ukraine's mineral wealth. On February 12, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent arrived in Kyiv to investigate what benefits the U.S. could derive from Ukraine. Simultaneously, Trump bypassed his own appointee Kita Kellogg and tasked his long-time friend, developer Steve Witkoff, with working towards ending the war in Ukraine.
The publication emphasizes that there are currently no guarantees that Trump's efforts will lead to real success in ending the war—unless Trump forces Ukraine to accept any Kremlin conditions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded the de-occupation of all Ukrainian territories seized by Russians. The Joseph Biden administration supported this idea, but not Trump.
The new U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pig Hegset, added fuel to the fire of despair and concern by excluding the return of Ukraine to its 2014 borders during a meeting on February 12 in "Ramstein." Essentially, the publication concludes that the U.S. is losing its leverage over Russia before negotiations even begin.
It is noteworthy that on February 12, President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky, following a similar conversation with Vladimir Putin. The White House noted that Trump's contacts with Putin and Zelensky were "very positive" and that both the Russian and Ukrainian presidents want peace. However, Trump made a number of unacceptable statements regarding Ukraine, specifically stating that Ukraine will not return to its 2014 borders and also declared that it will not become a NATO member.
In response to the American president's statements, the foreign ministers of Ukraine, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, and the European Union issued a joint demand for Trump to provide effective security guarantees for Ukraine and to ensure a place for Kyiv and Europe at the negotiating table.
