Assad's defeat in just 11 days: what's currently happening in Syria (updated)

Syrian rebels have entered Damascus and declared the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. The latter has left the country by plane, while Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali stated that he is ready to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people.

The offensive in southern Syria began on November 29, 2024. Over these 11 days, the following has occurred:

09:35 Syrian rebels released a video from Bashar al-Assad's palace in Damascus. They are also appearing on state television. Additionally, footage has emerged showing the demolition of monuments dedicated to the Syrian dictator.

09:15 The Syrian government received security guarantees from militants, reported the republic's Minister of Communications. According to him, government officials will return to their positions within two days.

At the same time, the Israeli army confirmed the deployment of its troops in the buffer zone along the Syrian border. They noted that this was done "to ensure the safety of citizens and settlements on the Golan Heights" due to the threat of militant incursions. Israeli military officials emphasized that they are not intervening in the events occurring in Syria.

In Syria, Bashar al-Assad's regime has fallen. The "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" group has taken control of the capital, Damascus. Gunfire can be heard in the streets, and prisoners are being released from jails.

An IL-76 aircraft, reportedly carrying Bashar Assad, has disappeared from radar. Local media speculate that it may have crashed, but there is no confirmation of this information yet.

Local media claim that government troops have disguised themselves as civilians and left their positions.

Rebels have seized control of the capital's airport and have begun releasing prisoners from jails. The Republican Guard has ceased to guard Assad's residence. According to CNN, the president has left the country.
