On Saturday, January 25, the final of the Australian Open 2025 took place in Melbourne, Australia. The best result among Ukrainians was Elina Svitolina reaching the quarterfinals.
In the decisive match, American Maddison Keys (WTA No. 14) faced off against neutral Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka (WTA No. 1). The American emerged victorious in a 3-set battle, as reported by "Telegraph".
The final score was 6:3, 2:6, 7:5. This marks Keys' first Grand Slam title. In 2017, she lost in the finals of the US Open. Notably, Sabalenka had won her previous two finals at the Australian Open. Following her defeat, Aryna smashed her racket against the court.
It’s worth mentioning that in their six matches against each other, the American has won only twice. Notably, Keys eliminated Ukraine's second seed Svitolina in the quarterfinals of AO-2025.
It is known that the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is a fan of Sabalenka, who has supported the dictator. At the "Roland Garros 2023," Sabalenka publicly distanced herself from him. Nevertheless, Lukashenko keeps track of the athlete's victories.
