On Sunday, December 8, Syrian rebels entered the capital of the country, Damascus, where there were no signs of military deployment. Initially, reconnaissance units had entered the city in search of President Bashar Assad but were unable to locate him.

This was reported by Reuters and CNN. It is noted that after taking control of the city of Homs, the rebels continued their advance toward the capital and began entering Damascus on Sunday.

Residents of the Syrian capital report hearing gunfire in the city center, although the cause remains unknown. Meanwhile, thousands of people gathered in the main square of Damascus, chanting "Freedom."

The Syrian rebels fighting against Bashar Assad's government claim to have taken control of the notorious Sayyidah military prison north of Damascus.

"We informed the Syrian people about the liberation of our prisoners and the breaking of their chains, as well as announced the end of the era of injustice at Sayyidah prison," the statement reads.

At the same time, two high-ranking Syrian army officers told Reuters that President Bashar al-Assad has left Damascus. He allegedly used an aircraft to flee the capital in an unknown direction.

Preliminary reports suggest Assad may have been aboard a Russian Il-76T plane. Meanwhile, according to Flightradar, the Il-76T disappeared from radar under unknown circumstances on Sunday in the vicinity of Syria. This could have occurred near Al-Suweira.

In the General Staff of the Syrian Arab Army, soldiers were informed about the fall of Assad's regime and were ordered to lay down their arms. According to a Syrian officer, the Command (SAA) informed officers that "Bashar Assad's rule has ended following the rapid advance of the rebels."

The rebels themselves declared the success of the revolution. Opposition representatives added that they promise to transform the country into a democratic state, respect property rights, maintain Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and "hold Assad's regime accountable."

Local media claim that government troops have disguised themselves as civilians and abandoned their positions. Meanwhile, the rebels have taken control of the capital's airport and begun releasing prisoners from jails. The Republican Guard has ceased to protect Assad's residence.

The Prime Minister has remained and is preparing to hand over power. It is worth noting that President Assad ruled for 53 years.

Rebel forces in Syria have also declared Damascus "free from the tyrant Bashar Assad." This was stated in the Telegram channel of the Military Operations Command (rebel forces).

Previously, the rebels announced that they were taking control of state media offices in Damascus to "broadcast the announcement of victory over Assad."

Recall that earlier, "Telegraph" reported that Syrian rebels took control of a major city in eastern Syria.
