We've always wondered if the word "hello" exists in the Ukrainian language.

There are still many filler words that should be avoided.
Всю жизнь задавались вопросом: существует ли слово "здрастуйте" в украинском языке?

In our language, there are many words that sound similar to foreign ones, so there is no need to be afraid to use them in everyday conversation.

"Telegraph" will discuss whether it is appropriate to use the word "zdorastuyte" when greeting someone, and if it can be replaced with other expressions.

Is there a greeting "hello" in the Ukrainian language?

On the "Ukrainian Language" portal, linguists explain that this word appears in the works of many Ukrainian classics from the 19th to the 21st century. Yes, it is similar to the Russian term "zdorovstvuyte," but this is due to the fact that most Eastern European languages belong to the same group – Proto-Slavic. Therefore, it should not be considered a Russism or a calque.

It is worth noting that the word "zdorastuyte" can be found in the works of Panas Myrny, Panteleimon Kulish, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Oles Honchar, Ivan Bahriany, Pavlo Zahrebelyny and others. Linguists recommend using it in everyday communication, while in official and business contexts, it is better to use synonyms.

How not to greet in Ukrainian

There are still many filler words that should be avoided. While the word "zdorastuyte" is acceptable for greetings, there are certain lexemes that should not be used as they distort our language. For example:

  • "prived";
  • "zdraste".

Previously, "Telegraph" wrote about how to address women beautifully and correctly in Ukrainian.
