A criminal is operating in Dnipro, entering stores and eateries to pay with counterfeit 200-hryvnia banknotes. Corresponding videos have been published in the Facebook community "Raionchik," reports "Vidomo."
As seen in the first video, on December 10 at 20:45, a man ordered draft beer and snacks and attempted to pay with a fake banknote. However, the cashier quickly uncovered the deception: the scam failed.
He used the same method on December 12. Around 16:00, he placed an order at a café. Unfortunately, the trick worked: the barista gave him the change in real cash from the register.
How to identify counterfeit hryvnias
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) notes that there are several ways to recognize counterfeit hryvnias. In particular, by holding the banknote against the light. This checks for:
- The presence of watermarks (specifically, this refers to the image of a portrait that mirrors the portrait printed on the front side of the banknote. It also includes the digital denomination or the graphic sign of the hryvnia);
- The presence of a transparent element (this refers to the image of the digital denomination, which is visible from both the front and back sides. It appears complete without breaks or shifts when viewed against the light);
- A protective strip fully embedded within the paper thickness, which, when viewed with a magnifying glass against the light, reveals the denomination image, the inscription "HRN," and the depiction of the trident in both upright and inverted views.
You can also check the authenticity of the banknote by changing the angle of tilt. Pay attention to:
- The image (real banknotes change color when viewed from different angles. Additionally, as the angle of the banknote changes, the direction of the background image on the strip shifts (kinetic effect));
- A polymer strip partially embedded within the paper thickness (it contains the image of the digital denomination and the graphic sign of the hryvnia (for banknotes of 100-500 UAH), the State Emblem of Ukraine, and exhibits a pronounced kinetic effect);
- The image of the digital denomination.
